Ben Reed

Ben Reed is a product leader who came to residential HVAC by way of telecommunications engineering, applied research, and large capital projects. He spent four years at HAVEN IAQ in Vancouver leading product on a residential indoor-air-quality platform, where the experience of trying to find Canadian contractors who owned a combustion analyzer led him to the central problem of the residential trade: most residential HVAC systems are not measured, and most residential HVAC technicians are working in a sea of uncertainty.

He founded Teal Maker Consulting in 2023 to apply product, technology, and content discipline to the residential building trades. Teal Maker's client roster includes measureQuick (Jim Bergmann's commissioning and diagnostics platform), HVAC Know It All (Gary McCreadie's content brand), and Energy Vanguard (Allison Bailes' building science consultancy).

Ben writes the technical and business content for HVAC Know It All. He contributes to measureQuick's release-notes and announcements. He has presented at the 5th Annual HVACR Training Symposium with Caroline Hazard on the DOE Building America project, and with Brian Feenie and Shelby Breger on the Full Stack HVAC framework. He co-created the Better HVAC pledge, the Full Stack HVAC platform, and the Open HVAC commons.

He is not a licensed HVAC technician. His work focuses on translating between the technical authorities in the trade and the contractors building businesses around quality.
